Tips for a Smooth, Relaxed, and Beautiful Experience

Welcoming a new baby is one of the most special and emotional seasons of life, and your newborn session is such a beautiful way to preserve those tiny details you never want to forget. At Amanda Milo Photography, my goal is to make your newborn session feel calm, comfortable, and stress-free for the entire family. A little preparation before your session can go a long way in helping everything run smoothly and allowing us to capture those sweet, sleepy moments you’ll treasure forever.

What to Expect at Your Newborn Session

Newborn sessions at my studio typically last about 2 to 2 ½ hours. This extra time allows plenty of room for feeding, soothing, diaper changes, swaddling, and breaks whenever baby needs them. Newborn sessions are always baby-led, which means we move at your little one’s pace and allow time for comfort and flexibility throughout the session.

My studio is designed to be a cozy, welcoming space where you can relax while I carefully pose and photograph your baby. I also provide snacks and beverages for parents, so you can sit back, breathe, and enjoy the experience while I work to create beautiful, timeless images of your little one.

Tips to Help Your Session Go Smoothly

Try to Keep Baby Awake Before the Session

If possible, try to keep your baby awake for a little while before arriving at the studio. This can help baby settle into a deeper sleep once the session begins, which is ideal for those sweet, curled-up newborn poses. A bath, diaper change, or a little extra interaction before you leave can help keep them awake just long enough.

Feed Baby Right Before the Session

A full baby = a sleepy, content baby, which is exactly what helps make newborn sessions run smoothly. If you can, plan to feed your baby right before arriving at the studio or as soon as you get there. If baby needs to eat again during the session, that’s completely normal and always expected! We will take breaks whenever needed.

Dress Baby in Something Easy to Remove

Before the session, dress your baby in a loose-fitting sleeper or zip-up outfit to avoid marks on their skin and to make changing easier without disturbing them too much once they’re sleepy.

What to Bring to Your Newborn Session

To help your session go as smoothly as possible, here are a few helpful things to bring:

  • Extra bottles or feeding supplies (if bottle feeding)

  • Pacifier (even if baby doesn’t use one often, it can be very helpful for soothing during posing)

  • Extra diapers and wipes

  • A change of clothes for baby

  • Any sentimental items you’d like included (special blanket, heirloom, name sign, etc.)

  • An extra outfit for parents or siblings just in case

  • Milk/formula and burp cloths

  • Anything baby may need for comfort

If siblings are joining for part of the session, it can also be helpful to bring a small snack, quiet toy, or tablet for them while they wait.

What to Expect at the Studio

When you arrive, you can expect a warm and relaxed environment where everything is prepared with your baby’s comfort in mind. The studio will be kept cozy to help baby stay sleepy and comfortable during wrapped and posed images. I’ll guide you through the session every step of the way, so there is no pressure to know what to do.

Parents often worry if their baby will cry, need to eat, or need extra soothing — and I want you to know that all of that is completely normal. Newborn sessions are never rushed. We allow plenty of time for snuggles, breaks, feeding, and comforting your baby as needed.

A Few Extra Tips for Parents

  • Try not to stress — babies can sense our energy, and a calm environment helps so much.

  • If possible, avoid tight socks or clothing that may leave marks on baby’s skin before the session.

  • If parents or siblings are being photographed, try to wear neutral, soft tones for a timeless look.

  • Trust the process — newborn sessions are designed with patience and flexibility in mind.

  • Remember that perfection is not the goal — capturing your baby exactly as they are in this tiny season is what matters most.

The Most Important Thing to Remember

The most important thing you can bring to your newborn session is simply patience and trust. Babies have their own timing, and that is completely okay. My job is to create a relaxed experience where you can enjoy the moment while I carefully capture all of the tiny details — the little fingers, sleepy stretches, soft expressions, and sweet moments you’ll want to remember forever.

Newborns change so quickly, and this season passes in the blink of an eye. These images are more than just photos — they are a way to hold onto the feeling of these first days for years to come.

If you’re planning your newborn session, I would be honored to help you create something beautiful and timeless for your family.
